Community Service Projects

2018/2019

July – Book Donation to the Boys and Girls Club

The Rotary Club of Chambersburg donated books and freeze pops to the Chambersburg Boys and Girls Club to help with their summer reading program. The B&GC works with students during the summer to help them retain the reading progress they made during the last school year.

July/August – Stuff the Bus

The Club collected school supplies for the United Way’s annual effort to provide supplies to Franklin County school districts to distribute to students whose families cannot afford to purchase them on their own. Rotary collected about $400 of school supplies and cash donations at club meetings and during the Franklin
County PRIDE festival.

August – Downtown Cleanup

As part of the United Way’s annual May of Caring, the Rotary Club of Chambersburg helped clean up the banks of the Conococheague Creek in downtown and cover graffiti. This project was rescheduled twice due to rain and high waters.

September – Annual Dictionary Project

Each year the Rotary Club buys a dictionary for every third grade student in the Chambersburg Area School District. Rotarians and Interact Club members visit each class, distribute the dictionaries, and help the students learn how to use them.

October – World’s Greatest Meal

As part of Rotary’s ongoing efforts to eradicate Polio, our Rotary District is coordinating a fund-raising effort during the week of World Polio Day. The members of our club, along with the other 76 clubs in the District, will brown-bag their lunches and donate the money we would have spent for the weekly meal to Polio Plus. Last year the District raised over $20,000 through this effort.

November – Santa’s Toybox

The Rotary Club of Chambersburg partners with the Mercersburg Rotary Club to provide toys and clothing to over 300 children in the Tuscarora School District.

December – Sam’s Club Christmas & Salvation Army Bell Ringing

The club donates funds to the YMCA’s Sam’s Club and helps pack and wrap gifts for children who attend the Sam’s Club program in Chambersburg. We also volunteer to do bell ringing for the Salvation Army on the Saturday before Christmas.

February – Pancakes for Polio

We will conduct our second annual pancake breakfast to raise funds to donate to Rotary International’s Polio Plus initiative. Since 1985, Polio Plus has given the oral polio vaccine to over 2.5 billion children. Last year a record low number of children contracted Polio – just 22 cased in 3 countries.

March – Read Across America

During the week of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Rotarians and Interact students go to every kindergarten class in the school district and read the selected Dr. Seuss book to the children, then give each student one of their very own.

April – Chicken ‘n Stuff

Every year, the Rotary Club partners with the Knights of Columbus and the Masonic Lodge to sell chicken dinners at CAMS South to raise funds to support the Chambersburg Therapeutic Riding Center.

May – Legal Services Book Sale Cleanup

The Club volunteers during May of Caring to box up all the remaining books after the annual book sale and clean Laird Hall. The book sale supports Franklin County Legal Services’ ability to provide legal assistance to low-income Franklin County residents.

June – Downtown Cleanup

The Club will help United Way in a project to be determined in downtown Chambersburg
